Exploring Frankfurt: A Wanderer’s Guide to the Heart of Germany

Touching down in Frankfurt in March, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The city, often labeled as Germany’s financial hub, turned out to be a vibrant blend of old-world charm and modern energy. The crisp early spring air (with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 12°C) made wandering through its historic streets and riverside promenades an absolute delight.

My first stop was Römerberg, Frankfurt’s medieval heart. The half-timbered houses and cobblestone square instantly transported me to another era. From there, I climbed to the top of the Main Tower for an incredible panoramic view of the city. Seeing Frankfurt’s striking skyline from above was the perfect introduction to the mix of history and modernity that defines this place.

Just a short walk from Römerberg, I stumbled upon Kleinmarkthalle, a bustling indoor market where locals shop for fresh produce and artisanal treats. Here, I tried the famous Frankfurter Würstchen, a deliciously smoked sausage, and washed it down with a glass of Apfelwein (apple wine), a local specialty. If you’re into food markets, this place is a must-visit!

One afternoon, I took a slow stroll along the Main River. The Museumsufer (Museum Embankment) was lined with some of the best museums in Germany. The Städel Museum stood out with its impressive collection of European masterpieces, while the German Film Museum gave a fascinating look at cinema history. Art and history lovers could easily spend a full day here.

I couldn't visit Frankfurt without diving into its food scene. One evening, I found myself at Ebbelwoi Unser, a cozy tavern serving hearty Hessian cuisine. Their Grüne Soße (green sauce with boiled eggs and potatoes) was surprisingly refreshing, and their crispy schnitzel was one of the best I’ve ever had. For a more modern dining experience, Gustav offered an unforgettable Michelin-starred meal with a focus on seasonal ingredients.

For a change of scenery, I took a short train ride to Palmengarten, Frankfurt’s lush botanical garden. Even in early spring, the greenhouses were bursting with exotic plants, making it a peaceful retreat from the urban rush. Another great escape was Höchst, a charming old district with medieval buildings, a riverside castle, and a slower pace that felt worlds away from downtown Frankfurt.

As the sun set, Frankfurt revealed its lively nightlife. Oosten, a trendy rooftop bar on the riverbank, offered spectacular views of the skyline with creative cocktails in hand. If you’re more into an underground vibe, Jazzkeller, one of Europe’s oldest jazz clubs, had an intimate, soulful atmosphere that felt like a hidden gem. For electronic music lovers, Robert Johnson in nearby Offenbach was the place to be.

Frankfurt might not be the first city that comes to mind when thinking of European getaways, but it surprised me in the best ways. From historic streets and world-class museums to hearty German cuisine and a vibrant nightlife, it’s a city that rewards those who take the time to explore. If you ever find yourself wandering through Germany, don’t just pass through Frankfurt—stay, explore, and let the city’s energy pull you in.
